Soul Sisters - 16 x 20" Original Watercolor Painting
"Soul Sisters" was painted in celebration of the close friendships that women share.
This painting was inspired by Modigliani, an Italian painter who was painting in France alongside the other masters of impressionism . Modigliani painted strong women characterized by mask like faces and elongated forms. The painting within the painting is "Girl Before the Mirror", originally painted by Picasso. The young girl, named Marie, was painted several times by Picasso. The painting portrays a young and beautiful girl in the act of surveying herself in an oval mirror which reflects her likeness in a distorted way. The spectator is reminded of the frightening vanities in which a woman, viewing her countenance in a mirror, sees herself not the way she looks but as old and withered, as a skeleton, or overweight.
I painted Soul Sisters in hopes that the women in my life won't be so hard on themselves.
